Team Workshop

COURSE DESCRIPTION

ABS Team Off-sites are tailored team events designed to meet the developmental needs of a team or business unit. They are intended to significantly increase the level of engagement of team members individually and as a group. These are not training courses but facilitated workshops to be structured based on specific objectives of the business, department or team heads. However these workshops are likely to fall into one of three categories:

  • Type 1 - Personal development where the emphasis is on the individuals within the team
  • Type 2 - Team communications and working styles where the emphasis is on improving group dynamics and synergy
  • Type 3 - Implementation of strategic or operating plan or new business initiatives where the emphasis is on changes in working styles at both an individual and team level to maximise chances of success

In all three types of interventions, prior to the workshop we will be gathering data on the individuals and the team using the following tools:

  • Individual – Natural Thinking Preference (Jungian personality type) and Via Character Strengths
  • Team – Organizational Cultural Assessment Instrument (OCAI) and Via Team Profiles

These tools enable the production of standardised ‘maps’ of both the individuals as well as the whole team which forms the basis for discussions during the workshop.

DURATION

One to two days depending on the scope of the project.

OBJECTIVES

The main aim of type 1 workshops is to introduce the idea of different thinking styles and Via Character Strengths and to enable the team to appreciate each other’s strengths and unique contribution. The depth of personal development will be less than for the Authentic Leadership courses but nevertheless an increase in employee engagement is expected to result from the workshop.

The main aim of type 2 workshops is to improve communication between team members and apply thinking styles and character strengths to brainstorming, decision making and action planning. The exercises used will focus more the way we interact with each other than on each other’s strengths and contribution. This type of workshop will immediately bring about increased engagement which needs to be sustained through implementation of a concrete action plan after the workshop.

The main aim of type 3 workshops is to engage an entire team to take ownership of a significant change initiative. The framework and ‘maps’ generated for the workshop provides the language needed to articulate the change in behaviour required. A high level action plan for transformation is usually the output for this kind of workshop.

COURSE OUTLINE

Step 1
Prior to the workshop
  • Discussion with team leader to clarify the objectives of the workshop
  • Analysis of key documents relevant to the workshop
  • Collect individual data and generate personality profiles and reports
  • Run OCAI surveys to determine present and desired culture
  • Send out collated reports with reflection questions prior to workshop
Step 2a*
Facilitate Personal Development Workshop
  • Understand natural thinking preference and Via Character Strengths
  • Team members receive positive feedback from the rest of the group on strengths and unique contributions using the personality template provided
  • Run a number of personal development exercises using materials from Authentic Leadership
Step 2b*
Communications Workshop
  • Understand natural thinking preference and Via Character Strengths
  • Team members receive positive feedback from the rest of the group on strengths and unique contributions using the personality template provided
  • Breakout sessions to solve a particular issue with participants separated by thinking preferences
  • Integrate best ideas of each group into a coherent plan
Step 2c*
Transformation Workshop
  • Understand natural thinking preference and Via Character Strengths
  • Team members receive positive feedback from the rest of the group on strengths and unique contributions using the personality template provided
  • Brainstorm and develop an actionable plan to achieve transformation
